No doubt you've seen the great big
icon on the side bar.
You've thought to yourself, "I'd really like a cupcake right now...what is that over there?"
Cupcake Kids spun off from the children of the wonderful people at SixtyFeet. Their kids wanted to help the children of Africa as much as their parents did and they came up with the idea to sell some cupcakes on the corner. So far the movement has been a phenomenon across the US and has raised over $60,000 for orphan care.
Kids are naturally givers and philanthropists. I have wept over the big heart of my little girl, Kate, who raised close to $275 for her grandfather's ALS Benefit. How'd she do it?
That little 8 year old wonder woman baked pumpkin bread and sold it door to door in our neighborhood. She had to bake in batches of 3 loaves at a time and she sold them for $10 each. You do the math at how many times she had wash the dishes and put everything away to earn that $275.00. Kate is shy and going door to door was excruciating for her but she pushed herself out of her comfort zone for the love of her grandfather. How many adults are ready to go way out of their comfort zones to help another person in need?
A few weeks ago my 7 year old girl Layne BEGGED me to let her sell Otter Pops (Freeze Pops for those of you in Texas who don't know the brand Otter Pops!) to raise money for my best friend and her husband who is battling cancer. My kids stood outside in 107 degrees for almost 2 1/2 hours! They sold them for .50 each and they made $52.50...After it was all over and we counted the money up, Layne emptied her little change purse and said, "Can I put this in with the other money?" Could she? She was asking if I would allow her to give everything she had to my best friend. How many of us would freely give everything we have?
My point isn't to show off my kids (though I do love braggin on them!) My point is to say that if we all caught the natural giving and philanthropic instinct that children have, the world would certainly be...cheerier! More filled with hope and goodwill and love.
I know my children will host their own Cupcake Kids event once we've met our own adoption fundraising goals. They both LOVE baking and eating their 'tasters' aka broken cupcakes, one's that accidentally dropped on the floor, or one's that just might not look good enough for selling! I look forward to that day with pride and antcipation.
